The 2022 Toyota Corolla remains largely unchanged for 2022. This compact sedan underwent a redesign in 2020 and is currently in its 12th generation.
Safety
The new Corolla features a number of helpful driver-assist features through the Toyota Safety Sense™ suite 2.0 (TSS 2.0). These high-tech safety features help protect you from accidents by sending you alerts behind the wheel. Many of these apps can even apply brakes and steering as needed to correct unwanted lane changes or tailgating to prevent accidents. TSS 2.0 features include:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/ PD)
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA)
- Automatic High Beams (AHB)
- Road Sign Assist (RSA)

These features come available on all trims of the Corolla, along with the Star Safety System®™, featuring Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Smart Stop Technology (SST), and Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD). Select trims come standard with the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).
Performance
The standard gas-powered Corolla comes powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine generating 139-horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. This mild-mannered performance helps the Corolla earn excellent fuel economy and travel up to 30 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. Available on select trims is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 169-horsepower and 151 pound-feet. This engine features Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), giving it extra fuel economy.
Most trims come with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), though select trims feature a six-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT) you can choose instead. The XSE Apex Edition features a performance-oriented Dynamic Shift CVT.
Technology
Each trim of the new Toyota Corolla has a lot of technology that you will appreciate in your daily travels. All available trims feature a seven-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and Amazon Alexa capability, giving you access to some of your favorite devices. Hands-free phone capabilities are available through Bluetooth®, with steering-wheel-mounted controls so you never have to take your eyes off the road. Most trims also feature multiple USB ports for easy charging, with any trims offering Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging and ambient interior lighting to help set the mood.
The exterior of the Corolla comes standard with LED headlights, taillights, and Daytime Running Lights (DRL), which provide better illumination than their outdated halogen counterparts and are more energy efficient.
